Concludes that the dental formula is DI 3/3 DC 0/1 DM 0/3 M 12-15/12-15; that the large number of molars is a primitive (but "generally inhibited") mammalian character despite the manatee's descent from forms with normal counts; and that horizontal tooth replacement is an "illusion" due to growth of the mandible. |
