Figs. 179-183. —Describes the circumstances of occurrence and taphonomy of the Stanford (California) Paleoparadoxia skeleton, attributes fractures of its hind legs to a fall, and suggests shark attack as the cause of death. Also describes details of the hindlimb and other joints, interpreting them to indicate somewhat froglike postures in both terrestrial and aquatic locomotion, and a terrestrial gait similar to that of otarioid pinnipeds. |
