On the basis of "two skulls, two ribs, and a strip of skin," provisionally proposes the name Manatus latirostris for the Florida manatee, in case external differences should be found sufficient to separate it from M. senegalensis! Harlan's specimens were collected by a Dr. Burrows (or Burroughs; see K. F. Koopman, 1976) "on the Coast of East Florida, in the year 1822." Harlan also quotes from Burrows a few lines of information "obtained from the natives" concerning the manatee (392). | ||
